1.1 Imported Products and Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring Team
Monitoring level of radioactivity in selected imported food stuffs and other items such as: Milk and dairy products, Fish, Metal Billets and Metal Products, Fertilizers. Monitoring the concentration of radio nuclides in environmental and food samples ( soil, water, rock, crops, cereals etc.), Environmental radioactivity assessment in mining, Developing baseline data on ambient level of radiation in the environment and undertaking trend analysis using Environmental TLD, Monitoring the level of radon gas in places where the level is expected to be above the permissible limit, Monitoring the level of annual occupational radiation exposure of mining workers from naturally occurring radioactive materials.
1.2 REPR and RAWM Team
Tasks under Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Response (REPR):
Review national policy of the participant institution, Perform threat assessment, Develop planning basis, Develop concept of operations and allocate responsibilities, Develop interim capability, Write National Radiation Emergency Plan (NREP), Present NREP, Implement detailed plans, Test the capability,Establish ongoing quality assurance(QA) and maintenance.
Tasks under Radioactive Waste Management (RAWM):
Make and maintain control with all relevant persons involved with radioactive waste to provide an authoritative point of advice and guidance, Establish and maintain a detail record keeping system for all stages of radioactive waste management, including the inventory of radioactive waste, Ensure that waste package for off- site transportation is prepared to be in compliance with Transport Regulations, Ensure that appropriate shielding, labeling, physical security and integrity of waste packages, Segregation, collection and characterization of radioactive waste, Treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste.
1.3 Inspection and Enforcement Team
Conducting Inspection based on: Regular inspection Programme and, Request from the customer (Verification Inspection, Inspection based on past profile of the institution.
Conduct inspection using Quality control(QC) check list, Conducting Inspection whether orphan radiation sources are found or not, Conducting Inspection and ensuring the availability of orphan radiation sources, Monitoring and controlling the safety and physical security of radioactive sources with high risk, Follow–up on institution with non–compliances, Enforcement action
Possible actions for non-compliance: Formal instructions assured & correct the infraction, Written warning for non – compliance, Suspension of or restrictions on, operation until regulatory infraction or safety condition is corrected, Seal radioactive source/ Radiation emitting device or the room where these sources are found, Prosecution, Gathering evidence and legal background for initiating prosecutions
